Eid Al-Adha, the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar, celebrated by millions across the globe. This year, Eid falls on June 5th, and with the added luxury of a week-long public holiday in Muscat, it’s the perfect opportunity for families and friends to come together, reflect on the blessings in life, and make plans for both local and international travel. As Muscat’s scorching summer heat sets in, Eid offers the ideal occasion to create lasting memories through gatherings, meaningful traditions, and much-anticipated vacations.
The Significance of Eid Al-Adha
Eid Al-Adha marks the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage and commemorates the unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who was willing to sacrifice his son Isma’il in obedience to God’s command. As the story goes, just as Ibrahim was about to make the ultimate sacrifice, God intervened, providing a ram to be sacrificed in his son’s place. This profound act of devotion and submission is celebrated each year by Muslims around the world, symbolizing sacrifice, gratitude, and submission to the will of Allah.
The Eid celebrations are not only a spiritual observance but also a time for family and social unity. It’s a moment to reflect on the year gone by, to renew one’s faith, and to practice charity. Muslims often begin their Eid with prayers at the mosque, where they gather in large numbers to pray together. The rest of the day is spent visiting family, giving gifts, and enjoying special meals—especially the rich and hearty dishes that symbolize the spirit of giving.
A Week of Family Bonding
For many, Eid Al-Adha is a chance to reconnect with loved ones. Given that the holiday falls in June, just as summer is in full swing, families will be looking forward to long days together, where the scorching temperatures outside encourage relaxation indoors. Whether it’s enjoying a traditional feast or simply catching up on life, the festival is an opportunity to rekindle relationships and share the joy of the occasion.
One of the most cherished customs is the exchange of Eid gifts. From cash gifts (Eidi) to carefully chosen items for children and adults alike, this exchange is a gesture of love and appreciation. Additionally, the act of slaughtering an animal, typically a sheep or goat, symbolizes sacrifice, and the meat is distributed to family, friends, and the less fortunate—helping to reinforce the spirit of charity that is at the heart of Eid.
Travel Plans: Escape the Heat or Explore New Destinations
While Eid is a time for familial bonding, it also marks a peak travel season for many Omanis. With the extended public holiday, the opportunity to escape the heat and embark on a short getaway is tempting. Whether it’s a nearby cool destination within Oman or a more distant international trip, many families take advantage of this period to explore new places or reconnect with their roots.
For those wishing to stay local, Oman offers several cooler destinations such as Jebel Akhdar, where the temperatures remain significantly lower, or the coastal towns like Salalah, known for its monsoon season (Khareef), which brings lush greenery and a temperate climate in contrast to the rest of the country’s arid environment. These locations provide the perfect setting for families to unwind and enjoy nature’s beauty away from the heat.
Internationally, many Omani families opt for destinations like Dubai, Bahrain, or even further afield to Europe or Southeast Asia. Dubai offers luxury, entertainment, and cool shopping malls, perfect for families looking for a bit of indulgence during their break. For those seeking a more serene holiday, destinations such as Switzerland or the Maldives provide idyllic surroundings to recharge.
The desire to travel has increased over the years, and this summer, many will look to capitalize on the long break to either relax or explore new cultures. Travel agencies in Muscat are offering tailored packages that cater to family vacations, providing everything from organized tours to luxury stays, making it easier for residents to plan a memorable trip.
Making the Most of Eid: Reflection and Resolutions
Beyond the celebrations, Eid Al-Adha is also a time for reflection. In the fast-paced rhythm of modern life, it’s easy to overlook the values that Eid embodies. This Eid, consider taking time to reflect on the importance of gratitude, sacrifice, and charity. Many people use this time not just for physical bonding with their loved ones but also to spiritually reconnect with their faith.
For the youth, this could be an opportunity to reflect on personal goals and set intentions for the year ahead. For homemakers and working professionals alike, it’s an ideal moment to slow down, indulge in quality time with family, and appreciate the small joys in life.
Muscat’s summer heat can be intense, with temperatures soaring above 45°C in June. As the city enters the hottest months of the year, it’s essential to know how to stay cool and comfortable, whether you’re working from home, commuting, or simply going about daily life. Here’s a practical guide to help you beat the heat and stay refreshed during this sizzling season.
Stay Hydrated – The Key to Beating the Heat
The most important thing to remember in extreme heat is staying hydrated. Muscat’s dry, hot climate means you lose fluids quickly through sweating, so it’s vital to replenish them. Make it a habit to carry a water bottle with you and sip water throughout the day. Avoid sugary drinks or caffeine, as they can lead to dehydration.
In addition to water, consider adding refreshing beverages to your routine. Coconut water is packed with electrolytes and can help replenish lost minerals, while homemade smoothies with fruits like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges offer hydration and a boost of vitamins. Try infusing your water with fresh herbs like mint or a slice of lemon to make it more flavorful and tempting.
Dress Light – Fabrics and Colors Matter
When it comes to clothing, opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics that allow air circulation. Cotton, linen, and light-blend fabrics are ideal as they absorb sweat and allow your skin to breathe, helping you stay cooler. Dark colors absorb heat, so stick to light shades like whites, pastels, or neutrals, which reflect sunlight and keep you cooler. Loose-fitting clothes are also better for promoting airflow and preventing discomfort.
For added relief, consider wearing moisture-wicking fabrics, which are designed to pull sweat away from your body and keep you dry throughout the day. Avoid tight clothing, as it can trap heat and make you feel hotter.
Cool Down Your Work Environment – AC Hacks for Comfort
Whether you’re working from home or the office, air conditioning (AC) will likely be your best friend during these hot months. To optimize your AC’s cooling effect, keep doors and windows closed during the day to prevent warm air from entering. You can also block out direct sunlight with heavy curtains or blinds to keep the room cooler. A small fan placed near your desk can help circulate air and provide additional relief.
If you’re looking for an affordable alternative to turning the AC up higher, place a bowl of ice or a frozen water bottle in front of the fan. As the ice melts, the fan will blow cool, moist air around the room. This simple hack can make a noticeable difference in how cool you feel.
Early Mornings and Late Evenings: The Best Time for Outdoor Activities
While the midday sun is far too intense for outdoor activities, the early mornings and late evenings in Muscat provide a much-needed respite from the sweltering heat. If you enjoy outdoor exercise or walks, try scheduling your activity before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m., when the sun is lower in the sky and temperatures are more bearable.
If you prefer to stay indoors, consider taking part in virtual fitness classes, yoga, or stretching exercises in the cool comfort of your home. Keeping active even when it’s hot outside helps to maintain energy levels and improve mental well-being.
Beat the Heat with Cool Treats
Sometimes, the best way to cool off is by indulging in a refreshing treat. Ice creams, frozen yogurt, and popsicles are always a favorite. But if you’re looking for something healthier, try freezing fruit like grapes, mango slices, or berries for a natural, cool snack. You can even make your own frozen fruit smoothies by blending your favorite fruits with yogurt and freezing the mixture in molds for a DIY popsicle.
For a fun twist, try making cold herbal teas, like peppermint or chamomile, and store them in the fridge for a soothing, ice-cold drink.
Venturing Outdoors – Smart Tips for Commuting
Commuting during the summer heat can be challenging, especially when you need to get to work or run errands. If you’re using a car, make sure to park in shaded areas to avoid getting into a sweltering vehicle. Before getting into your car, start the AC and allow the air to circulate for a few minutes before driving. If possible, opt for early morning or late afternoon commutes to avoid the midday heat.
For those who use public transportation, ensure you wear a wide-brimmed hat or sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun, and carry a small, portable fan to cool down during your wait.
Some inspiring ideas to help you create cozy and cool indoor spaces that offer respite from the heat—while elevating your home’s aesthetic appeal.
Start with a fabric refresh. Pack away heavy velvet or wool curtains, thick rugs, and dark bedding. Replace them with light, breathable materials like cotton, linen, or sheer fabrics in soft, neutral tones. These allow for better airflow and reflect sunlight, instantly making your space feel cooler and brighter. Think light-colored slipcovers, airy drapes, and crisp white sheets—perfect for those summer siestas.
Indoor plants are not just beautiful; they’re functional. They purify the air, regulate humidity, and create a tranquil vibe. Opt for low-maintenance greenery like peace lilies, snake plants, pothos, or ferns—all of which thrive indoors and add a refreshing pop of green. For an extra touch of summer charm, group plants in decorative pots or baskets made of natural materials like jute, rattan, or ceramic in coastal hues.
Color plays a powerful role in influencing how we perceive temperature. This summer, cool things down with a palette of soft blues, sea foam green, pale gray, and creamy white. Whether it’s a feature wall, cushion covers, or a painted old stool turned side table, refreshing your space with cooling colors can make a big visual difference without much effort or expense.
Get creative with easy, budget-friendly DIY home projects that double as stylish upgrades. Here are a few to try:
These simple projects not only enhance your home’s ambiance but also offer satisfying ways to spend time indoors creatively.
A clutter-free space feels cooler and more inviting. Summer is a great time to declutter and simplify. Remove unnecessary decor, rearrange furniture to allow for more space and flow, and let your rooms breathe. Open spaces paired with minimalistic decor can make your home feel fresh and expansive, even in the sweltering heat.
Maximize natural light during early mornings and late afternoons. Use mirrors to reflect light and give the illusion of a bigger, brighter space. For evenings, opt for warm LED lights or fairy lights for a soft glow that adds coziness without generating heat.
Final Tip: Keep a pitcher of infused water with lemon, mint, or cucumber handy—and enjoy your cool and cozy oasis all summer long.
As the temperature rises and the holiday season kicks in, the corporate pace often slows. With clients on vacation, projects paused, and offices running on reduced staff, summer months can lull even the most diligent professionals into a state of relaxed inertia. But quieter periods don’t have to be unproductive. In fact, with the right mindset, summer can be a golden window to recharge, reorganize, and refocus.
Here’s how to stay sharp and make the most of the slow summer stretch.
Reframe “Slow” as an Opportunity
Instead of seeing summer downtime as a slump, treat it as a strategic pause. This is your chance to tackle long-postponed tasks—cleaning up your inbox, updating files, revisiting your goals, or developing new skills. Use the quiet to work on passion projects, experiment with ideas, or revisit your professional growth plan.
Set Clear, Seasonal Goals
Productivity in summer doesn’t have to mean packing your to-do list. Set realistic, time-bound goals that reflect the slower pace. Break bigger projects into smaller milestones. Create weekly or biweekly check-ins to track progress and keep momentum. This approach not only builds structure into unstructured time but also provides small wins to keep motivation high.
Stay Cool, Stay Focused
Hot weather can take a toll on concentration and energy levels. Adjust your work environment for comfort and clarity:
A comfortable setting goes a long way in supporting mental alertness and steady performance.
Make Time for Learning
Summer is a great season to upskill. Enroll in a short online course, attend virtual conferences, or dive into industry reading. Many companies offer learning and development tools—take advantage of them when daily demands are low. Investing in personal growth not only enhances your capabilities but prepares you for the busier months ahead.
Maintain Structure, But Be Flexible
Routine is key to staying productive, but it doesn’t have to be rigid. Consider a summer-adjusted schedule if your workplace allows it. Early start, early finish routines—or even split shifts—can help maintain balance while maximizing output. This flexibility can improve energy levels, reduce burnout, and enhance overall satisfaction during warmer months.
Strengthen Team Culture
Fewer meetings and looser schedules offer a chance to build rapport with colleagues. Organize informal team check-ins, brainstorming lunches, or summer-themed virtual hangouts. Strengthening relationships during the lull can boost morale and collaboration when the pace picks up again.
Prioritize Work-Life Balance
Lastly, don’t forget the “life” in work-life balance. Take your own time off. Step outside, enjoy nature, and disconnect when the workday ends. A well-rested mind is far more productive than one running on fumes. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or just evening walks, make space for relaxation.
As summer temperatures soar, the motivation to head outdoors for a jog or gym session drops just as quickly. For many—especially youth on summer break and homemakers juggling daily routines—staying active indoors becomes the most practical (and sweat-free) option. But fitness doesn’t require a fancy gym or cool weather. With the right mindset, routines, and resources, you can turn your home into your own personal wellness studio.
Here’s how to stay fit, flexible, and focused this summer—without stepping outside.
Create a Dedicated Workout Space
You don’t need an entire room—just a small, clutter-free corner with a yoga mat and good ventilation. Natural light and fresh air, if possible, can uplift the mood. Keep resistance bands, light weights, a towel, and a water bottle handy. Having a go-to space makes it easier to mentally switch into “workout mode.”
Start with Yoga and Bodyweight Exercises
Yoga is the ultimate indoor workout—perfect for improving flexibility, posture, and mental well-being. Even a 15-minute morning flow can set the tone for the day. Combine this with bodyweight routines such as squats, push-ups, lunges, planks, and jumping jacks. No equipment required, just consistency.
Sample 20-Minute Home Routine:
Get Creative with Home Equipment
Water bottles for weights? Towels for sliders? Step stools for leg day? Yes! Everyday items can double up as fitness gear. You can even involve kids in fun movement breaks—turning fitness into family time.
Stay Cool, Stay Hydrated
During hot months, indoor workouts can still lead to dehydration. Drink water before, during, and after your session. Dress in breathable cotton or sweat-wicking fabrics, and avoid working out during the hottest part of the day (typically noon to 4 PM). Early mornings or evenings are best for energy and comfort.
Use Apps and Online Workouts
Technology can be your personal trainer. Try fitness apps like:
You can also join Facebook or WhatsApp fitness groups for accountability, daily challenges, and moral support. Many local trainers now offer virtual classes—giving you that community feel, from the comfort of home.
Stay Motivated with Mini Goals
Set achievable weekly targets—be it five workouts, 5000 daily steps (tracked at home), or trying a new routine. Reward yourself with something non-food related, like a relaxing bath or new workout gear. Keeping a fitness journal or tracking progress in an app can also help visualize your journey.
Summer in Oman is all about soaring temperatures—but that doesn’t mean your style has to take a backseat. For the youth demographic, staying fashionable during the heat means mastering the balance between comfort and trend. With breathable fabrics, fresh color palettes, and playful accessories leading the season, you can keep your wardrobe on point all summer long.
Here’s a roundup of the hottest fashion and accessory trends to keep cool and stylish this season.
When it comes to summer dressing, fabric choice is everything. Lightweight and natural materials like cotton, linen, bamboo blends, and muslin are the go-to heroes of the season. Not only do they allow airflow and absorb sweat, but they also offer a relaxed, effortlessly cool vibe.
Style Tip:
Loose-fitting cuts are key—think oversized shirts, wide-leg trousers, and flowy dresses. Not only are they chic, but they allow better air circulation compared to tighter silhouettes.
This summer, youth fashion leans into function-meets-style. Soft utility pieces like cargo pants in breathable cotton, safari-style shirts, and drawstring skirts are trending. These pieces combine comfort with a rugged edge and are perfect for both casual hangouts and weekend outings.
Look for earth tones, pastel khakis, and lightweight denim to pull this trend together.
Cool Color Palettes
Hot weather calls for cool hues. This season’s favorites include mint green, sky blue, buttery yellow, and terracotta. These shades not only reflect light better than dark tones but also keep the look fresh and photo-ready.
For a local touch, opt for traditional patterns reimagined in summer colors—perfect for mixing heritage with trend.
Accessories are where summer style comes alive. This season, keep an eye out for:
Oman’s fashion scene is blooming with young designers and influencers who are redefining what it means to be stylish in the heat.
Sustainable is Stylish
Gen Z and Millennials are also leading the way in sustainable fashion. Thrift shopping, upcycling old pieces, and supporting local slow-fashion labels are in vogue. Look good, feel good, and do good—all at once.

Unplug: Use this time to disconnect from work and reconnect with nature or loved ones.
An early morning drive through Oman’s picturesque mountainous landscape, covering 180 kilometers, was the perfect start to an unforgettable adventure. The route, full of winding curves and bends, offered spectacular views of nature’s beauty. Along the way, we passed through two monumental tunnels, whose precision-crafted architecture made us feel like we were venturing into space. This was our journey to Safari World.
Ibra, a town with a rich history, has long been a key trading hub connecting Oman’s interior with its coastal regions. Once an important center for the frankincense trade, its historical significance was evident as we drove through the region.
Arriving at Safari World, we purchased tickets for RO 5/- per person, which we felt was well worth the experience. Upon entering the park, we were greeted by the vibrant colors and sounds of macaws and cockatoos—nature’s very own receptionists—welcoming us with their screeching cries. Their playful greetings were followed by the warm hospitality of the Maamri family, who run the park.
After grabbing a quick bite of juicy burgers and hot tea, we heard the early morning roars of African lions, almost sounding like a welcoming “Ahlan wa Sahlan.” These magnificent creatures were our first hosts. It was delightful to see a family of four cubs with their parents in one frame. The cubs playfully dipped in the cool water and chased dragonflies—a moment that reminded me of my own cats at home trying to catch flies.
Our tour continued for over an hour, offering a spellbinding view of animals and birds from around the world. One of Safari World’s standout features is the large glass windows of the animal enclosures, giving visitors an up-close view—as if you were shaking hands with these majestic creatures.
With a diverse collection of over 300 animals, the park showcases nature’s vast wonders—from household pets to apex predators. Some highlights included:
All the animals appeared comfortable and content in their spacious enclosures, seemingly indifferent to the crowds observing them.
A fascinating moment came when we spoke with the zoo manager, who shared that Safari World is a family-run initiative founded by Khalfan bin Said Maamri, a passionate animal lover from Ibra. His vision was to enhance Oman’s tourism offerings, and after 10 years of planning and hard work, Safari World officially opened its doors on Eid Al Fitr 2024 as a gift to the nation.
The park spans 286,000 square meters, with plans to expand by another 120,000 square meters in its second phase, which is already underway.
I’ll refrain from sharing all the details of my experience—as I’d rather let you discover this wonder for yourself. Safari World offers a unique, enriching experience, especially for children, who were filled with joy and awe seeing the natural wonders they’d only read about or seen on screens come to life before their eyes.
